The composition focuses on the physical toll of their labour, with the children leaning forward against the weight of the load. A dog runs alongside them, adding a sense of movement to the otherwise bleak scene. Perov uses a muted palette of greys, browns, and whites to convey the harshness of the Russian winter and the grim reality of child labour during this period.

The painting belongs to the Peredvizhniki movement, a group of Russian artists who sought to bring art to the public by depicting everyday life and social issues. Perov was known for his critical eye regarding the conditions of the poor and the disenfranchised. In this work, he captures the exhaustion of the children, whose faces reflect a weariness beyond their years. The background features a high, imposing wall, which serves to isolate the figures and emphasise their struggle against an indifferent urban environment. The light is diffused, suggesting a cold, overcast day, which further contributes to the sombre mood of the piece.
