A fine etching by Bernard Picart depicting the Triumph of Galatea, based on a preparatory sketch by Raphael.
This print by Bernard Picart depicts the mythological scene of the Triumph of Galatea. The composition is based on a preparatory sketch attributed to Raphael, which was held in the collection of Gosuinus Uilenbroek in Amsterdam during the early eighteenth century. Picart, a French engraver who spent much of his career in the Netherlands, was known for his technical precision in reproducing works by earlier masters.
The image shows the sea nymph Galatea at the centre, surrounded by a retinue of sea creatures and putti. Her form is dynamic, captured in a contrapposto stance that suggests movement across the waves. The surrounding figures, including tritons and sea horses, create a sense of swirling motion typical of the Baroque interest in theatricality and classical narrative. Picart uses fine, controlled lines to define the musculature of the figures and the fluid motion of the water, demonstrating his mastery of the burin and etching needle.
The print reflects the eighteenth-century practice of documenting private collections through high-quality reproductive engravings. By translating a sketch into a formal print, Picart allowed a wider audience to engage with the aesthetic qualities of the original design. The work remains a clear example of the collaborative nature of printmaking during this period, where the engraver acted as a mediator between the original conception of a Renaissance master and the contemporary collector. The paper retains the subtle tonal qualities of the original ink, providing a clear view of the artist's draftsmanship and the compositional energy of the scene.
