A detailed woodblock triptych by Utagawa Yoshikazu depicting a busy pleasure barge with passengers inside and labourers on the roof.
This woodblock print triptych by Utagawa Yoshikazu captures a lively scene aboard a pleasure barge, a common subject in the Ukiyo-e tradition of the Edo period. The composition is divided across three sheets, showing the interior of the boat filled with passengers, musicians, and entertainers, while labourers work on the roof above. The contrast between the leisure activities below and the manual labour above provides a glimpse into the social dynamics of the time.
Utagawa Yoshikazu, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, was known for his depictions of foreign subjects and genre scenes. In this work, the artist employs a clear, linear style typical of the mid-nineteenth century. The figures are rendered with precise outlines, and the colour palette relies on traditional pigments, including muted reds, blues, and ochres. The lanterns hanging from the roof structure bear inscriptions, adding a layer of graphic detail to the scene. The water is depicted with stylised, repetitive wave patterns, a hallmark of Japanese printmaking that provides a sense of movement to the stationary vessel.
This print offers a view into the urban culture of Edo, where pleasure boats were popular for social gatherings and excursions along the rivers. The attention to detail in the clothing patterns and the arrangement of the figures demonstrates the technical skill involved in producing multi-sheet woodblock prints. The work remains a record of the period's social life, capturing the interplay between different classes within the confined space of a river craft. The print is presented here as a museum-grade reproduction, maintaining the integrity of the original woodblock impressions and the specific colour relationships intended by the artist.
