A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Anthonie Waterloo, depicting a quiet rural scene with a prominent tree, a riverside cottage, and figures.
Anthonie Waterloo was a Dutch painter and etcher active during the seventeenth century. He focused almost exclusively on rural subjects, often depicting wooded areas, quiet waterways, and humble dwellings. This etching demonstrates his technical approach to the medium, utilising varied line weights to construct the textures of bark, foliage, and the soft earth of the riverbank.
The composition follows a traditional Dutch arrangement: a large, dominant tree occupies the foreground on the right, providing a visual anchor that draws the eye into the scene. Beyond this, the middle ground features a small cottage nestled near the water, while the background recedes into a distant view of a town or village. Waterloo used cross-hatching and delicate parallel lines to create tonal depth, suggesting the play of light across the leaves and the reflective surface of the water.
Waterloo was known for his ability to capture the specific character of different tree species. His work often avoids the dramatic or the heroic, opting instead for a quiet observation of the natural world. This print reflects the broader interest in topographical and rural subjects that defined much of the printmaking output in the Netherlands during this period. The figures included in the scene, such as the person in the small boat and the traveller on the path, provide a sense of scale and human presence without dominating the natural environment. The etching process allows for a high degree of detail, particularly in the rendering of the gnarled branches and the rough texture of the cottage roof. This work is a representative example of his output, showing the balance between observation and the formal requirements of the etching plate.
