A refined diptych featuring delicate tree peonies and classical calligraphy by the Shijo school master Matsumura Keibun.
This diptych by Matsumura Keibun presents a classic example of the Shijo school, which emerged in Kyoto during the Edo period. The left panel features a delicate rendering of tree peonies, a subject long associated with prosperity and spring in East Asian art. Keibun employs a soft, naturalistic approach to the petals, using subtle gradations of pink and white to suggest volume and texture. The foliage is executed with controlled brushwork, maintaining a balance between detail and the fluid spontaneity characteristic of the Shijo style.
The right panel contains a calligraphic transcription of a Chinese poem concerning the peony. The ink work displays the confident, rhythmic strokes of a master calligrapher, providing a visual counterpoint to the botanical study. By pairing the floral image with literary text, Keibun follows the tradition of the literati, where painting and poetry function as complementary modes of expression. The composition is restrained, allowing the negative space of the silk ground to define the boundaries of the subject matter.
Matsumura Keibun was a central figure in the development of the Shijo school, following in the footsteps of his brother, Matsumura Goshun. His work is noted for its technical precision and its ability to capture the essence of natural subjects without excessive ornamentation. This piece reflects the refined aesthetic preferences of the Kyoto elite during the early nineteenth century. The use of silk as a medium provides a smooth, luminous surface that enhances the clarity of the ink and the softness of the pigments. This print captures the original tonal qualities of the silk, offering a faithful reproduction of the artist's brushwork and the subtle interplay between the painted image and the calligraphic script.
