A Renaissance triptych by Sandro Botticelli, featuring the Transfiguration of Christ flanked by the scholarly figures of Saint Jerome and Saint Augustine.
This work by Sandro Botticelli presents a triptych-like arrangement, featuring the Transfiguration of Christ at the centre, flanked by Saint Jerome and Saint Augustine. The central panel depicts the biblical event on Mount Tabor, where Christ appears in a radiant white garment, accompanied by Moses and Elijah. Below, the apostles Peter, James, and John are shown in states of awe and prostration, reacting to the divine light. The composition relies on the verticality of the figures to convey the spiritual elevation of the scene.
The side panels provide a contrast to the celestial event. Saint Jerome is depicted on the left, seated in his study, engaged in his scholarly work. Saint Augustine occupies the right panel, similarly portrayed in a contemplative, studious environment. These figures represent the intellectual tradition of the Church, grounding the miraculous central event in the reality of theological study and historical scholarship. The architectural settings of the side panels, with their shelves and books, offer a domestic, human scale that balances the ethereal nature of the Transfiguration.
Botticelli employs a linear style, characteristic of his later period, where the focus remains on the clarity of form and the expressive gestures of the figures. The colour palette is restrained, using muted tones in the side panels to direct the viewer's attention toward the luminous, central figure of Christ. The work reflects the artist's engagement with the religious tensions of late fifteenth-century Florence, where the influence of Savonarola encouraged a shift toward more austere and devotional imagery. This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to integrate complex theological narratives into a structured, balanced visual format, maintaining a clear distinction between the divine and the earthly realms through both composition and light.
