A detailed nineteenth-century engraving of the Antwerp Town Hall, capturing the architectural character of the Grote Markt.
This engraving depicts the Grote Markt in Antwerp, featuring the sixteenth-century Town Hall as its primary subject. The work is attributed to the engraver H. Bibby, based on a painting by W. Jones. Such prints were common during the nineteenth century, serving as visual records for travellers and collectors interested in European architecture and urban life.
The composition employs a wide-angle perspective to capture the scale of the Renaissance structure, which was designed by Cornelis Floris de Vriendt. The facade displays a mix of Flemish and Italian influences, characterised by its tiered levels and central gable. Bibby uses precise line work to render the stonework and the rhythmic repetition of the arched windows. In the foreground, the artist includes figures in period dress, providing a sense of scale and daily activity within the square. The cobblestones and shadows are rendered with fine hatching, typical of the period's printmaking techniques.
This print offers a view of Antwerp before the extensive urban modifications of the late nineteenth century. It documents the architectural character of the city, focusing on the interplay between the monumental civic building and the surrounding domestic structures. The print is a clear example of the topographical tradition, where the goal is to provide an accurate and aesthetically pleasing representation of a specific location. The inclusion of the title at the base, written in a formal script, suggests its origin as a plate for a travel publication or a portfolio of European views. The work remains a useful reference for those studying the historical appearance of Antwerp's city centre.
