A historical photograph by Kassian Céphas depicting a traditional Javanese dance performance within the Kraton of Yogyakarta.
This photograph captures a performance of traditional Javanese dance, likely a Srimpi or Bedhaya, within the grounds of the Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat. Kassian Céphas, the first professional photographer of Javanese descent, documented the court life of Yogyakarta with precision and technical skill. His work provides a rare visual record of the cultural practices within the royal palace during the late nineteenth century.
The composition shows a line of performers positioned across the open courtyard. They wear traditional court attire, including batik textiles and elaborate headpieces. The figures are arranged in a formal, symmetrical line, reflecting the disciplined nature of the dance. Behind them, the architecture of the Kraton is visible, with open-sided pavilions providing a backdrop for the performance. The surrounding trees add depth to the scene, framing the performers against the shaded areas of the palace grounds.
Céphas was appointed court photographer to the Sultan of Yogyakarta, Hamengkubuwono VII. This position granted him unique access to ceremonies and daily life that were otherwise inaccessible to outsiders. His photographs are noted for their clarity and their ability to capture the atmosphere of the Javanese court. The image is presented here as a high-quality fine art print, preserving the tonal range of the original gelatin silver process. It offers a view into a specific historical moment, documenting the intersection of traditional Javanese performance and the emerging medium of photography in the Dutch East Indies.
