This print originates from the Tōkei gafu, fusatsu, a supplementary volume of woodblock-printed designs by the Japanese artist Ogura Tōkei. Active during the late Edo period, Tōkei produced works that reflect the aesthetic values of the literati tradition, or bunjinga, which drew inspiration from Chinese painting techniques and subject matter. The composition displays a figure alongside horses, rendered with the economy of line characteristic of traditional brush-and-ink studies.
The image demonstrates a focus on calligraphic line quality, where the artist uses varying pressure to define the contours of the figures and the musculature of the animals. The background remains largely empty, a common convention in Japanese print culture that directs the viewer to the essential forms of the subject. The paper retains its aged, warm tone, typical of woodblock prints from this era, providing a neutral ground for the black ink lines.
