A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Herman van Swanevelt depicting the biblical story of Tobias and the angel in a wooded, pastoral setting.
This etching by Herman van Swanevelt depicts a narrative from the Book of Tobit. The scene shows the young Tobias recoiling from a large fish in the water, guided by the archangel Raphael. A small dog stands between the two figures, adding a domestic element to the biblical encounter. Swanevelt, a Dutch painter and etcher who spent significant time in Rome, became known for his ability to integrate classical figures into atmospheric, wooded settings.
The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century printmaking. Dense foliage and tall trees frame the scene, creating a sense of depth that draws the eye toward the distant horizon. The artist employs fine, rhythmic lines to define the textures of the bark, the ripples in the water, and the feathers of the angel's wings. The contrast between the dark, shadowed foreground and the lighter, more open background provides a clear structure to the narrative.
Swanevelt was part of a group of Northern European artists who adopted the Italianate style, often referred to as the Bamboccianti or simply Italianate Dutch painters. His work reflects a fascination with the Roman countryside, which he frequently populated with mythological or religious subjects. This particular print demonstrates his technical proficiency with the etching needle, allowing for a fluid, sketch-like quality that captures the movement of the figures and the stillness of the surrounding nature. The inclusion of the publisher's mark, K. Audran, suggests this print was part of a wider circulation of his work during the period. It remains a representative example of how seventeenth-century artists combined biblical storytelling with the aesthetic sensibilities of the European pastoral tradition.
