A delicate pen and ink study by Antonio Maria Viani, capturing the biblical encounter between the Archangel Raphael and the young Tobias.
This drawing depicts the biblical narrative of Tobias and the Archangel Raphael. Antonio Maria Viani, a painter and architect active in Mantua, employs a fluid, calligraphic line to define the figures. The angel stands to the left, guiding the young Tobias, who holds a small fish in his left hand, a reference to the curative properties of the fish gall described in the Book of Tobit.
The composition reflects the stylistic tendencies of late sixteenth-century Italian art. Viani uses light brown wash to suggest volume and shadow, creating a sense of form without relying on heavy hatching. The figures possess the elongated proportions and graceful, slightly artificial postures characteristic of the Mannerist period. The angel's drapery falls in rhythmic, sweeping folds, which contrast with the more compact, youthful figure of Tobias.
As a preparatory study, the work offers insight into Viani's draughtsmanship. The lines are confident and economical, capturing the essence of the interaction between the celestial guide and the human traveller. The paper shows signs of age, with a warm, aged tone that complements the brown ink. This piece provides a clear example of the technical skill required in ecclesiastical commissions of the era, where clarity of narrative was balanced with stylistic elegance. The focus remains on the gesture of the hands, which serves as the primary point of connection between the two figures. The work is a study in movement and divine guidance, rendered with the precision expected of a court artist serving the Gonzaga family in Mantua.
