A 1620 title page etching by Claes Jansz. Visscher, featuring allegorical rural imagery and intricate cartouche design for a series by Abraham Bloemaert.
This etching serves as the title page for a series of prints by Abraham Bloemaert, published by the Dutch engraver and cartographer Claes Jansz. Visscher in 1620. The composition functions as an allegorical introduction to a collection of rural scenes, titled 'Verscheyden aerdige Lanthuysen'. Visscher, a central figure in the Amsterdam print trade, employed a dense, descriptive style to frame the title text within a cartouche.
The imagery draws upon the iconography of rural life. A male and female figure, representing the agrarian population, occupy the centre of the frame. They are surrounded by the tools of their trade: a scythe, a rake, a basket, and a water vessel. A horse and a cow flank the figures, grounding the scene in the reality of the Dutch countryside. The cartouche itself is decorated with grotesque elements, a common feature in Northern Mannerist design, which adds a layer of artifice to the rustic subject matter. The text clearly identifies the collaboration between Bloemaert and Visscher, noting the place of publication as Amsterdam.
The technical execution demonstrates the precision typical of Visscher's workshop. The lines are fine and controlled, allowing for a high degree of detail in the textures of the animals, the woven baskets, and the folds of the figures' clothing. The contrast between the dark, shadowed areas and the lighter, central cartouche directs the viewer's eye to the title. This print is a fine example of the commercial print culture in the Netherlands during the early seventeenth century, where artists and publishers worked in close cooperation to produce series of images for a growing market of collectors and enthusiasts. The work remains a clear record of the aesthetic preferences of the period, combining technical skill with a thematic interest in the rural environment.
