An allegorical engraving by Adriaen Collaert depicting the discovery of the Americas, featuring Neptune, Flora, and portraits of Vespucci and Columbus.
This engraving by Adriaen Collaert serves as the title page for the series 'Americae Retectio', a collection of prints documenting the European discovery of the Americas. The composition is dense with allegorical figures and cartographic detail. At the centre, a large globe displays the continents, flanked by the figures of Flora and Neptune. These deities represent the natural abundance and the maritime power associated with the Age of Discovery. Above, portraits of Amerigo Vespucci and Christopher Columbus are framed within circular medallions, identifying the explorers credited with the voyages.
The lower portion of the print features a coastal map, providing a geographical context that links the mythological figures to the physical world. The fine line work, characteristic of Collaert's technical skill, captures the textures of the sea, the drapery of the figures, and the precision of the cartographic elements. The Latin inscription at the bottom addresses the difficulty of composing a poem worthy of the magnitude of these discoveries, reflecting the intellectual climate of the late sixteenth century.
Collaert, a member of the prolific Antwerp school of printmakers, worked closely with the designer Jan van der Straet (Stradanus). This collaboration resulted in a visual language that combined classical mythology with contemporary historical events. The print is a clear example of the Mannerist interest in complex, multi-layered narratives. It functions as both a decorative frontispiece and a historical document, capturing the European perspective on global exploration during this period. The balance between the celestial, the mythological, and the terrestrial creates a structured, hierarchical view of the world as understood by the cartographers and artists of the time.
