An 1814 etching by Johann Adam Klein depicting a soldier with two horses, serving as the title page for his military series.
This etching by Johann Adam Klein, dated 1814, serves as the title page for his series titled 'Sechs militärische Gegenstände' (Six Military Subjects). Klein, a German artist who spent significant time in Vienna, was known for his precise observation of animals and daily life. This work captures a soldier standing alongside two horses in a courtyard setting. The composition is balanced, with the soldier and his mounts positioned against a plain wall and an arched doorway.
The etching demonstrates Klein's technical proficiency with the needle. He employs fine, controlled lines to define the musculature of the horses, the texture of their coats, and the folds of the soldier's uniform. The cobblestone ground is rendered with subtle hatching, providing a sense of texture without overwhelming the scene. The inscription, written in a clear, elegant script, provides the context for the series, noting that the works were drawn from nature and etched by the artist in Vienna.
During this period, Klein was deeply engaged with the realities of the Napoleonic era, often focusing on the quiet moments of military life rather than the chaos of the battlefield. His work reflects the Biedermeier interest in domesticity and accurate, unadorned representation. The print is characterised by its clarity and restraint, avoiding unnecessary embellishment. It offers a glimpse into the observational practices of a nineteenth-century printmaker who prioritised anatomical accuracy and narrative simplicity. The paper shows signs of age, consistent with its production in the early nineteenth century, which adds to the historical character of the piece.
