A precise seventeenth-century etching by Abraham Bosse, featuring a decorative wreath of foliage surrounding a Latin title and religious monograms.
This etching by Abraham Bosse serves as a title page for a series of prints depicting the Passion of Christ and the life of the Virgin Mary. Bosse, a French printmaker known for his technical precision and his treatise on the art of etching, demonstrates his mastery of line here. The composition is structured around a central Latin inscription, which is framed by a dense, circular wreath of foliage.
Within the leaves, eight circular medallions are arranged. Four medallions on the left bear the monogram 'IHS', representing the name of Jesus, while the four on the right display the monogram 'MA', signifying the Virgin Mary. The foliage is rendered with fine, controlled strokes, creating a sense of volume and texture that is characteristic of Bosse's work. At the base, a decorative cartouche contains the phrase 'Cum privil. Regis', indicating the royal privilege granted for the publication of the series.
The work reflects the seventeenth-century tradition of using elaborate title pages to introduce devotional print cycles. The balance between the text and the surrounding botanical elements is typical of the period's preference for order and clarity in religious iconography. Bosse's ability to combine calligraphic lettering with naturalistic forms makes this print a clear example of his contribution to the French printmaking tradition. The clarity of the etching process allows for the fine details of the leaves and the crispness of the lettering to remain legible, even at a small scale. This print is a study in symmetry and formal balance, providing a formal introduction to a larger narrative sequence.
