A detailed 1620 Baroque engraving by Theodoor Galle, featuring an architectural title page design with classical figures and symbolic iconography.
This engraving by Theodoor Galle serves as the title page for the second volume of 'Annales Sacri', a historical work by Augustinus Torniello published in Antwerp in 1620. The composition follows the tradition of the architectural title page, a common feature in seventeenth-century European book production. Galle organises the visual space into a structured framework that mimics a classical monument, complete with pedestals, columns, and a pediment.
At the centre, the Latin text provides the bibliographic details of the publication. Flanking this central block are two figures: Moses, holding the tablets of the Law, and a prophet, holding a scroll. These figures represent the Old Testament tradition, providing a theological context for the historical text. Above the central panel, a cartouche features a globe surrounded by celestial elements, supported by two putti. One putto holds a flaming torch, while the other carries a palm branch, symbols of divine light and peace.
Below the main text, a smaller horizontal panel depicts a scene of religious significance, framed by the Latin inscriptions 'Ecclesiae Exaltatio' and 'Synagogae Interitus'. The entire design is executed with the precision characteristic of the Antwerp school of engraving, which was closely associated with the Plantin Press. The line work is fine and controlled, creating a sense of depth through hatching and cross-hatching. This print demonstrates the technical mastery of the period, where the engraver functioned as both a craftsman and an illustrator, translating complex theological concepts into a formal, balanced visual language suitable for a scholarly publication.
