A detailed Renaissance woodcut title-border by Urs Graf, featuring classical mythological scenes including Pyramus and Thisbe.
This woodcut by the Swiss artist Urs Graf serves as a title-border for a scholarly edition of Cicero, published in Paris by Conrad Resch. Graf, a prolific draughtsman and goldsmith, was known for his energetic and often unconventional approach to printmaking. The composition is densely packed with classical and mythological narratives, typical of the Renaissance interest in antiquity. The border features a series of distinct scenes. At the base, one observes the tragic tale of Pyramus and Thisbe, alongside the Judgment of Paris. The figures are rendered with a characteristic vigour, displaying the artist's preference for expressive, slightly distorted anatomy and dynamic movement. The upper register includes putti and decorative elements that frame the central text block, which contains the Latin title of the work. A central shield at the bottom displays the printer's mark, flanked by mythical creatures. Graf's work is defined by a sharp, linear quality that translates well to the woodblock medium. The contrast between the black ink and the paper creates a clear visual hierarchy, allowing the text to remain legible while the surrounding imagery provides a rich, narrative context. This piece reflects the sixteenth-century practice of using elaborate borders to elevate the status of printed books, turning the title page into a visual gateway for the reader. The inclusion of diverse mythological subjects within a single frame demonstrates the period's fascination with encyclopaedic knowledge and the integration of classical themes into contemporary European design.
