A detailed 1664 etching by Jean Lepautre documenting the festivities at the Château de Versailles, featuring elaborate Baroque decorative borders.
This etching by Jean Lepautre depicts the Château de Versailles during the 1664 festivities known as 'Les Plaisirs de l'Isle enchantée'. The composition functions as a title page for the commemorative series documenting the three-day celebration hosted by Louis XIV.
The central view captures the palace grounds, showing the architecture as it appeared before the extensive later expansions. A procession of riders moves across the foreground, providing a sense of scale and activity. The scene is framed by elaborate decorative borders characteristic of the period. These borders include swags of fruit, floral garlands, and putti supporting a central coat of arms. Below the main view, a series of smaller oval cartouches contains allegorical imagery, surrounding the descriptive text that outlines the event details.
Lepautre was a prolific engraver whose work documented the architectural and decorative projects of the French court. His technical precision allows for the clear rendering of the palace structure and the surrounding gardens. The print demonstrates the formalised aesthetic of the mid-seventeenth century, where architectural documentation merged with ornamental design. The use of line work creates a clear distinction between the distant palace and the heavily decorated foreground elements. This piece provides a record of the early state of Versailles, reflecting the courtly culture of the era through its structured, balanced composition and detailed iconography.
