A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Albert Flamen, depicting four tench on a riverbank with precise line work and naturalistic observation.
This etching by Albert Flamen depicts four tench, a freshwater fish, resting upon a riverbank. Flamen, a Flemish artist active in Paris during the seventeenth century, produced a significant body of work focused on aquatic life and birds. His approach to printmaking is characterised by a precise, observational quality that bridges the gap between scientific documentation and artistic composition.
The composition places the fish in the foreground, rendered with careful attention to their scales and anatomical features. Behind them, the riverbank is populated with tall reeds and grasses, while a distant cottage and a small boat on the water suggest a quiet, rural setting. The use of line work creates a sense of texture, from the smooth surfaces of the fish to the rougher, more gestural marks used for the vegetation. The inclusion of the Latin and French names, 'Tinca piscis' and 'La Tanche', along with the 'Cum privil. Regis' inscription, indicates that this print was part of a larger series intended for a sophisticated audience interested in natural history and the decorative arts of the period.
Flamen's work reflects the seventeenth-century fascination with the natural world, often categorising species through detailed visual records. Unlike more dramatic Baroque compositions, this piece maintains a calm, descriptive focus. The etching technique allows for fine detail, particularly in the cross-hatching used to model the forms of the fish and the shadows cast upon the ground. This print offers a glimpse into the intersection of biology and art, where the subject is treated with both technical rigour and aesthetic consideration. It remains a fine example of the printmaking traditions that flourished in Europe during this era, providing a clear, monochromatic view of the natural environment.
