A satirical lithograph by Gustave Doré, contrasting two social archetypes of nineteenth-century Paris through witty visual puns.
This lithograph by Gustave Doré belongs to his early career as a caricaturist, a period often overshadowed by his later success as a book illustrator. The work presents a satirical social commentary through a visual pun. On the left, labelled 'Tigre', a diminutive, dandyish figure in a top hat stands beside a horse, mimicking the posture of a larger rider. The term 'tigre' in nineteenth-century French slang referred to a small, smartly dressed groom or servant who accompanied his master.
On the right, labelled 'Serin', the scene shifts to a social interaction between a gentleman and a lady. The term 'serin' (canary) was used colloquially to describe a foolish or gullible person. Doré employs a light, fluid line to capture the exaggerated proportions and fashionable attire of the Second Empire period. The composition is sparse, relying on the contrast between the two distinct vignettes to convey the humour.
Doré was a prolific draughtsman, and his ability to observe the absurdities of Parisian society is evident here. The figures are rendered with a quick, gestural quality that suggests the spontaneity of a sketch, yet the precision of the lithographic process ensures the details of the clothing and the expressions remain clear. This piece offers a glimpse into the satirical culture of mid-nineteenth-century France, where social status and personal affectation were frequent subjects for artists. The work is part of a broader series of social observations that demonstrate Doré's early mastery of characterisation and his keen eye for the nuances of human behaviour. By juxtaposing these two types, he creates a witty dialogue about the pretences of the era, using simple visual cues to define the social standing and personality of his subjects.
