Macke was a member of the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), along with Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc. This group sought to express spiritual truths through abstract art. Macke's style blends elements of Fauvism and Cubism with a distinctive use of light.
