A pencil sketch by Vincent van Gogh, 'Three Studies of Women' features quick studies of working-class women, likely dating from his time in the Netherlands.
This pencil sketch by Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) presents three separate studies of women. Executed on paper, the work likely dates from his period in the Netherlands, around 1885-1886. Van Gogh returned frequently to the theme of peasant life, and these studies appear to be preparatory sketches of working-class women. The upper left study depicts two women from the rear, wearing hats and dresses. The upper right shows two women standing side by side, also seen from the front. The lower portion of the sheet contains two further sketches: a woman seated at a table, possibly sewing, and another woman standing with an umbrella. The composition is economical, with van Gogh using quick, decisive lines to capture the figures' forms and postures. The annotations in French add another layer of insight into the artist's thought process.
