This hanging scroll features the brushwork of Shinozaki Shōchiku, a scholar and calligrapher active during the late Edo period. The work displays three vertical columns of characters executed in a fluid, expressive script. Shōchiku, known for his mastery of both Chinese and Japanese literary traditions, employs a rhythmic variation in line weight that reflects the speed and pressure of the brush against the paper surface. The ink density shifts from deep, saturated blacks to lighter, drier strokes, providing a sense of movement across the composition.
The text itself follows traditional poetic structures often associated with longevity and auspicious themes, common in scholarly circles of the nineteenth century. The characters are arranged with a balance between the density of the ink and the negative space of the paper, a hallmark of the literati style. The scroll is mounted with a decorative textile border, which frames the central calligraphy and provides a visual transition between the artwork and the surrounding space. Red seal impressions are visible, serving as the artist's signature and mark of authenticity.
