A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Crispijn de Passe I, documenting the structural characteristics of Turkish, Italian, and Sardinian galleys.
This engraving by Crispijn de Passe I depicts three distinct types of galleys, identified in the Latin inscription as Turkish, Italian, and Sardinian vessels. The work reflects the period's fascination with maritime technology and the geopolitical realities of the Mediterranean during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. De Passe, a prolific Dutch engraver and draughtsman, utilised precise line work to delineate the structural differences between the ships, focusing on the rigging, hull shapes, and oar arrangements. The composition is organised to provide a clear view of each vessel, with the central galley positioned to show its rowers and deck configuration. The background features a stylised coastline and a radiant sun, elements common in the cartographic and maritime prints of the era. The artist employs cross-hatching and varied line weights to create texture on the water and the sails, providing a sense of volume to the ships. The Latin text at the base, 'Triremium (quas vulgo Galeas vocant) Turcicae, Italicae, ac Sardiniensis delineatio', confirms the subject matter as a technical study of these specific naval craft. Crispijn de Passe I was central to the dissemination of visual information in the Netherlands, producing numerous series of prints that documented everything from contemporary fashion to mythological scenes. This particular print belongs to a broader tradition of maritime documentation, where the accuracy of the vessel's construction was as important as the aesthetic quality of the image. The print remains a valuable record of naval architecture from the early modern period, demonstrating the technical skill of the De Passe workshop in capturing complex mechanical forms through the medium of copperplate engraving.
