Description

A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Nishikawa Sukenobu, depicting three women in a quiet, domestic scene of music and leisure.

Nishikawa Sukenobu was a significant figure in the development of the Ukiyo-e genre, particularly in the depiction of women, known as bijin-ga. This work presents three women in a relaxed, domestic setting, a common theme in the artist's output. The composition is balanced, with the figures arranged in a triangular formation that draws the eye across the scene. One woman plays a shamisen, while the others engage in quiet leisure, reflecting the cultural interests of the Edo period. The artist employs a refined line quality, characteristic of his training in the Kano school before he turned his attention to the popular woodblock print medium. The figures wear kimono with distinct patterns: one features a grid-like check, while another displays a delicate floral motif. These textile details demonstrate the artist's attention to the fashion of his time. The colour palette is restrained, relying on a base of warm, neutral paper tones contrasted with blocks of red, blue, and white. Sukenobu was known for his prolific work in illustrated books, which helped disseminate these styles to a wider audience. His approach to the female form is graceful, with soft facial features and elegant postures. The inclusion of a small tray with writing implements or cosmetic items adds a layer of narrative detail, suggesting a moment of artistic or personal preparation. The work is signed and sealed on the right side, consistent with the practices of the period. This print provides a clear view into the aesthetic preferences of 18th-century Japan, focusing on the quiet activities of urban life rather than dramatic historical or theatrical events. The composition remains flat, prioritising the decorative quality of the garments and the arrangement of the figures over the creation of a deep, three-dimensional space.
