A classic 18th-century Japanese woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu II, featuring three kabuki actors in traditional theatrical attire.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu II depicts three kabuki actors in a style characteristic of the Torii school. The Torii lineage held a near-monopoly on the production of kabuki-related imagery during the Edo period, often creating promotional materials for the theatres of Edo. The composition features a central male figure flanked by two others, likely representing a specific scene or a promotional portrait of performers. The figures are rendered with the bold, sweeping lines typical of the early Ukiyo-e tradition, where the emphasis lies on the dramatic posture and the distinct patterns of the kimono.
The print employs a limited colour palette, common in early hand-coloured or simple multi-block prints of the era. The use of tan-e (a reddish-orange pigment derived from lead) provides a warm tone against the paper, while black ink defines the contours and the intricate textile patterns. The actors are depicted with the exaggerated, powerful features associated with the aragoto (rough style) of acting, which was popularised by the Ichikawa Danjuro line of actors. The figures occupy a shallow, two-dimensional space, focusing the viewer's attention on the theatricality of their poses and the graphic quality of their costumes.
As a piece of yakusha-e (actor print), this work functions as both a record of a performance and a piece of ephemera for fans of the kabuki theatre. The cartouche at the bottom includes the artist's signature and the publisher's mark, confirming its origin within the Torii workshop. The print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of 18th-century Japan, where the theatre and the print market were closely linked. The work remains a clear example of the graphic economy and stylistic conventions that defined the early development of the Ukiyo-e genre before the introduction of full-colour nishiki-e printing.
