A detailed 1747 engraving by Jacobus Houbraken depicting the physician Thomas Sydenham, framed by medical iconography and classical architectural elements.
This engraving by the Dutch artist Jacobus Houbraken depicts the English physician Thomas Sydenham. Houbraken was a prolific engraver, known for his technical precision and his contributions to Thomas Birch's 'Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain'. The portrait is presented within a stone-carved oval frame, a common convention in eighteenth-century portraiture that provides a sense of architectural permanence.
Sydenham is shown in a bust-length format, wearing the attire of a seventeenth-century gentleman, including a lace cravat and a draped cloak. His expression is calm and observant, reflecting his reputation as a clinician who prioritised direct observation of patients. Below the oval frame, the composition incorporates symbolic elements related to the medical profession. A staff entwined with a serpent, the Rod of Asclepius, rests alongside medical texts and a lidded vessel. These objects signify his contributions to medicine, particularly his work on fevers and the classification of diseases.
The engraving demonstrates Houbraken's command of line and shadow. He uses cross-hatching to create depth in the drapery and the stone masonry, while the lighter, finer lines in the face capture the texture of the skin and the softness of the hair. The inclusion of the inscription 'In the Possession of John Sydenham Esq.' and the publication details 'Impensis J. & P. Knapton Londini 1747' provides clear provenance for the original painting from which this print was derived. This piece offers a window into the intersection of medical history and the printmaking traditions of the mid-eighteenth century.
