A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige II, depicting the scenic Sekiya no Sato with a bridge, river, and figures.
This woodblock print belongs to the series Thirty-six Views of Yedo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige II in 1862. The composition depicts Sekiya no Sato, a location known for its scenic qualities near the Sumida River. The artist employs a high vantage point, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition, to organise the scene into distinct spatial layers. In the foreground, a wooden bridge spans a narrow waterway where a small boat rests. The middle ground features a gathering of figures on a grassy expanse, shaded by a large, gnarled pine tree. Beyond this, the composition opens to reveal the river, with white sails visible in the distance, suggesting the movement of trade and travel.
The colour palette relies on the characteristic pigments of the period, including Prussian blue for the water and sky, balanced by earthy greens and soft pinks representing flowering trees. The print incorporates the standard cartouches found in the series, with the title block positioned in the upper right and the artist's signature block on the lower left. The lines are precise, defining the architectural elements of the bridge and the organic forms of the trees with clarity.
Utagawa Hiroshige II, a student of the master Utagawa Hiroshige, maintained the stylistic conventions of his predecessor while applying his own approach to spatial arrangement. This work provides a view of the social and geographical character of Yedo during the final years of the Edo period. The print captures a moment of leisure, with figures engaged in conversation or transit, reflecting the daily life of the region. The use of flat colour planes and clear outlines creates a sense of order, allowing the viewer to navigate the scene from the immediate foreground to the distant horizon.
