A traditional Japanese painting depicting the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals, rendered in ink and gold leaf on paper by Tatebayashi Kagei.
This work depicts the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals, a group of celebrated Japanese poets from the Nara, Asuka, and Heian periods. The subject matter draws from the tradition of 'kasen-e', or portraits of poetic masters, which became a popular theme in Japanese art. Tatebayashi Kagei, an artist active during the mid-eighteenth century, employs the stylistic conventions of the Yamato-e tradition to arrange these figures across a gold-leafed ground.
The composition is dense, with figures clustered in a manner that suggests a formal gathering or a courtly assembly. Each poet is rendered with distinct facial features and traditional court attire, including layered robes and formal headgear. The use of gold leaf provides a luminous background, which contrasts with the muted, earthy tones of the figures' garments. The artist uses fine, controlled lines to define the contours of the robes and the expressions of the individuals, maintaining a balance between individual characterisation and the collective nature of the group.
This piece reflects the cultural interest in classical literature and historical figures that persisted throughout the Edo period. By grouping these figures together, the artist creates a visual catalogue of literary authority. The flat perspective and the decorative application of colour are characteristic of the period's aesthetic, where the emphasis lies on the arrangement of forms and the quality of the materials. The work serves as a record of the enduring status of these poets within the Japanese canon, presented through the refined techniques of eighteenth-century painting.
