A woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi depicting two figures on a tidal flat, taken from a larger pentaptych series.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuniyoshi represents the third sheet of a larger pentaptych composition. The scene depicts two figures, an adult and a child, navigating a tidal flat. The artist employs a muted colour palette, typical of mid-nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking, where earthy tones and soft blues define the environment. The figures are rendered with the characteristic facial features and expressive postures associated with Kuniyoshi’s work during this period. Kuniyoshi was a master of the Utagawa school, known for his versatility across various genres, including warrior prints, caricatures, and bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women). In this specific work, the focus remains on the daily activities of common people, a recurring theme in Ukiyo-e art. The composition is balanced, with the figures positioned to guide the viewer across the shallow water. The inclusion of calligraphic text in the upper portion of the print provides context, often featuring poems or literary references that were common in such series. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the woodblock medium, with clear outlines and controlled colour application. The figures wear traditional striped garments, their clothing rendered with attention to pattern and texture. The background is simplified, allowing the interaction between the two figures to remain the primary subject. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the Edo period, where the intersection of nature and human activity was frequently explored through the medium of the printed page. As a museum-grade reproduction, this print captures the subtle gradations and line work of the original woodblock, preserving the historical character of the composition for contemporary display.
