A detailed 1648 etching by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione depicting the mythological moment Theseus uncovers his father's hidden weapons beneath a stone.
This etching depicts the classical myth of Theseus, who, upon reaching adulthood, lifts a heavy stone to retrieve the sword and sandals left for him by his father, King Aegeus. Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, a Genoese artist, demonstrates his mastery of the etching medium through the use of varied line weights and dense cross-hatching to create atmospheric depth. The composition is structured around the central figure of Theseus, who is shown in a moment of physical exertion as he moves the stone block. To his left, his mother Aethra stands with a young attendant, their figures rendered with flowing drapery that contrasts with the rugged, weathered textures of the surrounding ruins.
The setting is characteristic of Castiglione's interest in the antique, featuring an overgrown environment filled with broken masonry, an ornate urn, and a relief-carved stele. These elements suggest a sense of time passing and the weight of history. The light source appears to emanate from the opening beneath the stone, casting dramatic shadows that define the forms of the figures and the surrounding debris. Castiglione was known for his experimental approach to printmaking, often using a free, painterly style that departed from the rigid conventions of his contemporaries. This work, published by Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi in Rome, reflects the artist's ability to imbue mythological narratives with a sense of immediate, human drama. The fine lines and delicate shading techniques employed here allow for a high degree of detail, from the textures of the foliage to the subtle expressions on the faces of the figures. It is a representative example of seventeenth-century Italian printmaking, capturing both the technical skill of the etcher and the thematic preoccupations of the Baroque period.
