A serene watercolour by William Blake depicting the patriarch Job and his family in prayer, set within a pastoral landscape.
This watercolour depicts the opening scene of the Book of Job, where the patriarch Job sits with his family beneath a large tree. William Blake, a visionary poet and artist, produced several series illustrating the biblical narrative of Job. This particular composition focuses on the domestic harmony and piety of Job before his trials begin.
Job is positioned at the centre, his long white beard and robes suggesting age and authority. He holds an open book, likely the scriptures, while his wife and children kneel around him in prayer. The figures are rendered with Blake's characteristic linear style, where outlines define the forms against a soft, atmospheric background. Above the group, musical instruments hang from the branches of the tree, symbolising the praise and worship that define this period of Job's life. The sheep resting in the foreground provide a sense of pastoral calm, grounding the scene in the rural setting of Uz.
Blake uses a muted palette of earth tones, soft blues, and pale pinks to create a gentle, meditative mood. The composition is symmetrical, reflecting the order and stability of Job's household. The crescent moon in the upper right corner suggests the passage of time or the transition from day to night, adding a subtle celestial element to the earthly scene. This work demonstrates Blake's ability to translate complex theological themes into accessible, human-centred imagery. His approach avoids excessive ornamentation, allowing the narrative focus to remain on the figures and their collective act of devotion. The work is a fine example of Blake's late period, where his technical control over watercolour allowed for delicate washes and precise detail.
