A detailed hand-coloured engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder, depicting the biblical healing of the woman with an issue of blood.
This hand-coloured engraving by the Flemish artist Hans Collaert the Elder depicts the biblical narrative of the woman healed of an issue of blood. The composition follows the conventions of sixteenth-century Northern Renaissance printmaking, where multiple stages of a narrative are often presented within a single frame. In the foreground, the woman kneels before Christ, who is surrounded by his disciples. The figures are rendered with the precise, controlled line work characteristic of the period, while the application of colour adds a decorative quality to the garments and the surrounding environment.
Collaert employs a clear spatial arrangement, placing the primary interaction in the lower right while providing a background that includes architectural elements and a distant landscape. The inclusion of Latin and French text at the base of the image provides context for the scene, a common practice in devotional prints of the era intended for both educational and meditative purposes. The architectural details, such as the obelisk and the classical structure, reflect the influence of Italianate styles on Northern European artists during the late sixteenth century. The figures are dressed in contemporary interpretations of historical attire, a stylistic choice that brought biblical events into the visual vocabulary of the viewer's own time.
As a member of the prolific Collaert family of engravers based in Antwerp, Hans Collaert the Elder contributed to the dissemination of religious imagery across Europe. This print demonstrates the technical proficiency of the Antwerp school, which was a centre for print production. The work remains a clear example of how narrative art functioned as a tool for religious instruction, combining technical skill with theological storytelling. The balanced composition and the attention to detail in the drapery and facial expressions demonstrate the standard of craftsmanship expected from a master engraver of this period.
