Description
A portable devotional diptych from the late fourteenth century, depicting King Richard II presented to the Virgin and Child by his patron saints.
The Wilton Diptych is a portable devotional object consisting of two hinged oak panels. It depicts King Richard II of England kneeling before the Virgin and Child, who are surrounded by a host of angels. The left panel shows the King presented by his patron saints: Saint Edmund, Saint Edward the Confessor, and Saint John the Baptist. The right panel features the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, encircled by eleven angels wearing crowns and robes adorned with the white hart emblem of Richard II.
The work is a primary example of the International Gothic style, characterised by its refined elegance, use of gold leaf, and delicate application of tempera. The artist employed a sophisticated technique to create the figures, using fine brushwork to define facial features and the textures of the royal garments. The background of the left panel is composed of punched gold, while the right panel utilises a deep blue pigment, likely ultramarine, to create a contrast between the heavenly and earthly realms.
This diptych is notable for its iconography, which links the English monarchy to divine authority. The presence of the white hart, a personal badge of Richard II, appears on the angels' robes and as a brooch on the King's chest.
