A detailed genre painting by Pietro Longhi, capturing a quiet moment of domestic labour in eighteenth-century Venice.
Pietro Longhi, a Venetian painter, is recognised for his detailed observations of daily life in eighteenth-century Venice. Unlike his contemporaries who focused on grand historical or mythological subjects, Longhi turned his attention to the domestic sphere. This painting depicts a group of figures engaged in the manual labour of washing and spinning, a common sight in the city at the time.
The composition is arranged with a focus on the interaction between the figures. To the left, a woman leans over a wooden tub, her posture suggesting the physical effort of her task. In the centre, a younger woman stands, holding a piece of linen, while a child watches from behind. To the right, an older woman sits with a distaff, her attention fixed on her spinning. The lighting is directed to draw the eye toward the central figure, creating a sense of quiet activity within a modest interior.
Longhi uses a muted palette, dominated by earthy tones and soft shadows, which contributes to the grounded nature of the scene. The brushwork is precise, capturing the textures of the fabric and the simple clothing worn by the subjects. This work provides a window into the social fabric of the period, documenting the roles and tasks of ordinary people. It avoids the idealisation often found in the art of the era, opting instead for a direct representation of the working class. The painting remains a clear example of Longhi's ability to elevate everyday activities into subjects worthy of artistic study, maintaining a balance between narrative detail and formal composition.
