A detailed 16th-century engraving by Giorgio Ghisi, depicting the biblical Visitation after a design by Francesco Salviati.
Giorgio Ghisi, a master engraver from Mantua, produced this work after a design by the Florentine painter Francesco Salviati. The print depicts the biblical meeting between the Virgin Mary and Saint Elizabeth. Ghisi employs a sophisticated engraving technique, using dense cross-hatching and varied line weights to create a sense of volume and atmospheric depth within the architectural setting.
The composition is characteristic of the Mannerist period, featuring elongated figures and complex, crowded arrangements. The scene is set within a classical portico, where the central figures of Mary and Elizabeth are surrounded by a multitude of observers and attendants. Ghisi pays close attention to the drapery of the garments, which fold and twist in ways that suggest movement and tension. To the left, a female figure gestures towards the centre, while in the foreground, a seated woman with a child adds to the narrative density of the scene. The background architecture, with its columns and distant cupola, provides a structured environment that contrasts with the fluid, expressive poses of the foreground figures.
Ghisi was known for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of his sources into the medium of print. This engraving demonstrates his technical precision, particularly in the rendering of light and shadow across the tiled floor and the muscular forms of the figures. The work reflects the artistic climate of mid-sixteenth-century Italy, where the influence of Michelangelo and the Roman school shaped the aesthetic preferences of the time. By focusing on the dramatic interaction of the figures and the architectural framing, Ghisi creates a composition that invites close inspection of its technical details and narrative elements.
