The painting depicts the legend of Saint Eustace, a Roman general who, while hunting, encounters a stag with a crucifix between its antlers. This miraculous sight prompts his conversion to Christianity. The composition is notable for its lack of traditional linear perspective. Instead, Pisanello arranges the figures and animals across the surface in a manner reminiscent of a tapestry or a courtly miniature. The scene is crowded with a variety of fauna, including hounds, birds, and deer, all rendered with the precise observation characteristic of the artist's sketchbooks. The saint, dressed in the contemporary finery of a fifteenth-century nobleman, sits atop a horse adorned with elaborate trappings.
