A refined miniature from the Belles Heures, depicting the Tiburtine Sibyl and Emperor Augustus in the International Gothic style.
This exquisite miniature originates from the Belles Heures of Jean de France, Duc de Berry, a masterpiece of early fifteenth-century manuscript illumination. Attributed to the Limbourg brothers, the work demonstrates the technical precision and decorative refinement characteristic of the International Gothic style. The composition is divided into distinct registers, featuring a central circular medallion depicting the Virgin and Child surrounded by a radiant sunburst. Below this, the page presents two flanking scenes: the Tiburtine Sibyl on the left and the Emperor Augustus on the right. Both figures are set against a dark, patterned ground, which contrasts with the luminous gold leaf and saturated pigments used throughout the illumination.
The iconography relates to the legend of the Tiburtine Sibyl, who is said to have prophesied the birth of Christ to the Emperor Augustus. The Limbourg brothers employ a delicate line quality to define the drapery folds and facial features, while the overall arrangement remains ornamental, prioritising a balanced distribution of colour and form over spatial depth. The inclusion of Latin text, written in a formal Gothic script, integrates the visual narrative with the devotional content of the manuscript. This piece reflects the high level of craftsmanship commissioned by the Duc de Berry, whose patronage supported the development of Northern European painting during this period. The use of lapis lazuli and gold leaf provides a sense of material luxury, typical of high-status commissions intended for private prayer and contemplation. The work remains a significant example of the transition between medieval traditions and the emerging naturalism of the early Renaissance.
