Stefan Lochner, a leading figure of the Cologne School, produced this work during the mid-fifteenth century. The painting displays the characteristics of the International Gothic style, which favoured soft modelling, elegant silhouettes, and a meticulous approach to decorative surfaces.

The Virgin stands as the central figure, draped in a voluminous red mantle that falls in heavy, structured folds. She holds the Christ Child, who reaches upward towards a crown suspended above her head. The background features a textile-like pattern of stylised oak leaves and scrolling tendrils, rendered with gold leaf to catch the light. This decorative backdrop contrasts with the dark, atmospheric space above, where the crown appears to float.
