A devotional Renaissance panel by Antonio del Massaro da Viterbo, featuring the Virgin and Child set against a traditional gold-leaf background.
This devotional panel depicts the Virgin Mary cradling the Christ Child against a traditional gold-leaf background. Antonio del Massaro da Viterbo, known as Pastura, was an active painter in the Umbrian region during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. His work reflects the stylistic influence of his contemporaries, particularly Pinturicchio and Perugino, who shaped the artistic output of the period through their focus on soft modelling and balanced compositions.
The Virgin is shown in a half-length pose, her gaze directed downwards towards the child. She wears a dark mantle over a red tunic, with gold-trimmed edges providing a decorative contrast to the deep tones of her garments. The Christ Child is positioned on her left arm, his right hand raised in a gesture of blessing. The gold background is incised with a radiating pattern, a technique common in devotional art of the time to suggest a divine light surrounding the figures.
At the base of the composition, a narrow strip of landscape is visible, featuring distant hills and sparse vegetation. This inclusion of a terrestrial view beneath the golden void creates a transition between the celestial and the earthly realms. The figures exhibit the gentle, rounded facial features characteristic of Pastura's style. The paint application remains smooth, prioritising clarity of form and a serene expression. This piece reflects the standard iconography of the era, where the focus remains on the intimate connection between mother and child, presented within a formal, structured frame. The preservation of the gold leaf and the integrity of the panel surface allow for a clear view of the artist's technical approach to light and shadow.
