A devotional scene by Jacopo del Sellaio, featuring the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child and the infant Saint John the Baptist in a serene landscape.
This work by Jacopo del Sellaio depicts a traditional devotional scene common in late fifteenth-century Florence. The Virgin Mary kneels in prayer before the Christ Child, who lies upon the ground. To the left, the infant Saint John the Baptist observes the scene, holding a small cross. The composition is framed by a rounded arch, a characteristic format for private devotional panels of the period.
Sellaio, a student of Fra Filippo Lippi, demonstrates the influence of his master through the soft modelling of the figures and the delicate treatment of the Virgin's features. The palette relies on the contrast between the deep, dark tones of the Virgin's mantle and the lighter, warmer flesh tones of the children. The background features a detailed, atmospheric view of a river valley, which provides a sense of depth and distance behind the primary figures. This inclusion of a natural setting is typical of the period, as artists sought to integrate religious subjects into recognisable, earthly environments.
The painting reflects the stylistic preferences of the Florentine school during the Quattrocento, where clarity of form and balanced composition were prioritised. The figures are arranged in a triangular formation, creating a sense of stability and focus. The gold-leaf detailing on the garments and the halos adds a decorative quality, consistent with the transition from earlier medieval traditions to the more naturalistic approaches of the Renaissance. This print captures the fine details of the original tempera application, preserving the subtle gradations of colour and the precise brushwork that defines Sellaio's approach to sacred narrative.
