A satirical engraving by Hans Sebald Beham depicting two pairs of peasants dancing at a wedding, showcasing the artist's technical precision and narrative wit.
This engraving by Hans Sebald Beham belongs to a series depicting the boisterous festivities of a village wedding. Beham, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, produced small-scale prints that were highly sought after by collectors for their technical precision and narrative wit. The composition is divided into two distinct pairs of figures, each captured in mid-dance. On the left, Martinus Wintermon leads his partner with a deliberate, rhythmic step. On the right, Nicolaus Cristmon is shown in a more chaotic state, his posture suggesting the effects of excessive drink, with a stream of liquid falling from his mouth.
Beham employs a clean, controlled line to define the folds of the peasants' clothing and the textures of the ground. The figures are set against a plain background, which directs the viewer's attention to their expressive gestures and the social commentary inherent in the scene. Such depictions of peasant life were popular in sixteenth-century Germany, often serving as moralising tales regarding the dangers of gluttony and lack of restraint. The artist's monogram, ISB, is clearly visible between the two groups, confirming his authorship of this specific plate. The work demonstrates the artist's ability to combine observational detail with a satirical edge, characteristic of his broader output. By focusing on the physical awkwardness of the dancers, Beham provides a candid look at the social dynamics of the period. This print is a fine example of the technical mastery achieved by the German printmakers of the era, who utilised the medium of engraving to disseminate complex narratives to a wide audience. The clarity of the lines and the balance of the composition make it a compelling piece for those interested in the history of printmaking and the cultural life of the Northern Renaissance.
