A sixteenth-century engraving by Hans Sebald Beham depicting a lively scene of peasants dancing to music, part of his Twelve Months series.
This engraving is part of a series by Hans Sebald Beham, a member of the group known as the Little Masters. These artists produced small-scale prints for a growing market of collectors who appreciated technical precision and narrative detail. The series, titled The Twelve Months, depicts the activities associated with each season or month, often blending agricultural labour with social customs.
In this specific plate, numbered seven, Beham captures a lively scene of peasant life. A man and a woman dance or move with energy, while two musicians play a flute and bagpipes in the background. The figures are rendered with the sharp, clean lines characteristic of sixteenth-century German engraving. Beham uses cross-hatching to create volume and texture, particularly in the folds of the clothing and the foliage of the tree. The composition is balanced, with the figures occupying the foreground and a clear separation between the dancers and the musicians.
Beham was one of the most prolific printmakers of his time. His work often reflects the social hierarchies of the period, frequently focusing on the daily lives of common people. The inclusion of German text at the top of the print provides context for the scene, linking the visual imagery to the calendar year. This print offers a glimpse into the cultural habits of the sixteenth century, showing how art functioned as both a record of daily life and a decorative object for the home. The precision of the burin work demonstrates the high level of skill required for such miniature compositions, which were intended to be viewed closely.
