A detailed 1564 engraving by Cornelis Cort depicting the allegorical Triumph of Envy, featuring complex iconography and precise line work.
This engraving, executed by Cornelis Cort in 1564 after a design by Maarten van Heemskerck, depicts the allegorical subject of the Triumph of Envy. The composition follows the tradition of Petrarchan triumphs, where personified vices or virtues are paraded in elaborate chariots. Here, Envy sits atop a chariot drawn by horses, surrounded by figures representing associated negative traits such as Calumny, Detraction, and Perturbation. The scene is rendered with the technical precision characteristic of Cort, who was a master of the burin and played a significant role in the dissemination of Italianate styles within Northern Europe.
The visual narrative is dense with symbolic detail. The figures are arranged in a dynamic procession that moves across the foreground, while the background features a coastal scene with ships, providing a sense of scale and atmosphere. The use of hatching and cross-hatching creates a range of tones, defining the musculature of the horses and the folds of the drapery with clarity. Latin inscriptions are integrated into the lower portion of the print, providing a moralising commentary on the nature of envy as the mother of war and discord. This work reflects the intellectual climate of the sixteenth century, where classical themes were frequently adapted to explore human psychology and moral philosophy. The print demonstrates the collaborative nature of print production during this period, where the invention of the artist and the technical skill of the engraver combined to produce works for a discerning audience of collectors and scholars.
