A dramatic Baroque depiction of the biblical tribute money narrative, featuring expressive figures and warm, atmospheric lighting by Bernardo Strozzi.
Bernardo Strozzi, a Genoese master who later settled in Venice, produced this interpretation of the biblical narrative concerning the payment of the temple tax. The composition focuses on the interaction between Christ and the tax collector, a moment defined by the exchange of a coin. Strozzi employs a dramatic use of light, a hallmark of the Baroque period, to draw attention to the central figures while casting the surrounding group in shadow.
The palette is dominated by deep, warm tones, particularly the red of Christ's robe and the earthy ochres of the surrounding garments. Strozzi’s brushwork is fluid and confident, capturing the texture of the fabrics and the weathered expressions of the men. The figures are arranged in a tight, semi-circular formation, which creates a sense of immediate physical presence. A young boy on the left gazes directly at the viewer, providing a point of entry into the scene and balancing the composition against the tax collector on the right.
Strozzi was influenced by the naturalism of Caravaggio, yet he maintained a distinct Venetian sensibility through his handling of colour and light. The architectural elements, including the column and the stone ledge, provide a stable, grounded environment for the figures. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to convey psychological tension through gesture and eye contact. The tax collector’s hand, extended with the coin, acts as the physical centre of the narrative, while Christ’s calm demeanour provides a counterpoint to the worldly transaction. The painting remains a fine example of the emotive power characteristic of seventeenth-century Italian art, focusing on human interaction within a sacred context.
