The work belongs to the genre of illustrated books, or ehon, which were common during the Edo period. The composition is split between the visual illustration on the left and the accompanying Japanese text on the right, a format typical of the period's literary and artistic output.
The elephant is rendered with simple, clean lines, focusing on the outline of the animal and the ornate structure of the palanquin it carries. The palanquin itself is detailed with floral patterns, and the use of red ink provides a contrast to the otherwise monochrome black ink lines.
