A narrative scene from the Venetian High Renaissance, depicting the apocryphal trial of the infant Moses before Pharaoh.
The Trial of Moses, attributed to the Venetian master Giorgione, depicts an apocryphal narrative derived from midrashic tradition. In this account, the infant Moses is presented before Pharaoh, where he is tested by choosing between a bowl of burning coals and a bowl of gold. The child reaches for the coals, burning his hand and tongue, which explains his later speech impediment. The composition is divided into two distinct zones. The foreground features a gathering of figures dressed in contemporary Venetian attire, arranged in a frieze-like manner before a stone dais. The figures display a range of expressions and postures, typical of the Venetian school's interest in human interaction. To the left, the Pharaoh sits upon an elevated throne, while the central group focuses on the child and the vessels containing the test objects. The background reveals a sweeping, atmospheric view of a rural setting. Tall, slender trees frame the scene, leading the eye toward a distant fortified town and rolling hills. This integration of human activity with a natural environment is a hallmark of Giorgione's approach to painting. The soft, diffused light and the delicate handling of the foliage suggest the artist's preoccupation with mood and spatial depth. This work is often discussed alongside its companion piece, The Judgment of Solomon, as both share similar dimensions and thematic focus on legal or moral arbitration. The painting demonstrates the transition from the rigid structures of the early Renaissance toward the more fluid, tonal qualities that would define the Venetian style throughout the sixteenth century. The attention to costume detail and the careful rendering of the architectural elements provide a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the period.
