A detailed medieval illumination depicting the biblical story of the three Hebrews in the fiery furnace, crafted by the Limbourg brothers.
This illumination originates from the workshop of the Limbourg brothers, active in the early fifteenth century. It depicts the biblical narrative of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who were cast into a furnace by King Nebuchadnezzar for refusing to worship a golden idol. The scene is rendered with the precision characteristic of the International Gothic style, a period defined by its attention to detail and decorative refinement.
The composition is divided between the architectural structure of the furnace and the figures of the king and his attendants. The furnace is depicted as a stone structure, within which the three figures remain unharmed by the flames. The artist employs a clear, narrative approach, placing the king in the foreground, his regal status indicated by his crown and elaborate robes. The use of colour is deliberate, with the pinks of the king's garments contrasting against the cooler tones of the attendants and the blue sky above.
Technically, the work demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Limbourg brothers, who were commissioned by the Duke of Berry to produce some of the most celebrated manuscripts of the era. The application of pigment on vellum allows for a level of detail that remains sharp centuries later. The figures are arranged to guide the viewer through the action, from the king's gesture towards the furnace to the calm expressions of the figures within the fire. This piece provides a window into the devotional practices and artistic priorities of the late medieval period, where religious narratives were brought to life through meticulous illustration.
