A woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada from the series The Thirty-Six Immortals of Poetry as Kabuki Actors, depicting performers in dramatic poses.
This woodblock print originates from the series Yakusha sanjūrokkasen, or The Thirty-Six Immortals of Poetry as Kabuki Actors, produced by Utagawa Kunisada during the Edo period. Kunisada, a prolific designer of ukiyo-e prints, frequently merged the world of classical Japanese literature with the contemporary popularity of the kabuki theatre. In this series, he reimagines the traditional Thirty-Six Immortals of Poetry, a group of historical poets selected by Fujiwara no Kintō, as famous kabuki performers of his own time.
The composition presents two figures side by side, framed within distinct panels. The left figure holds a sword, displaying the intense, focused expression characteristic of the mie pose in kabuki performance. The right figure is depicted with a dynamic, dramatic posture, his hair and costume rendered with bold, graphic lines. Kunisada employs a monochromatic palette, relying on the strength of his line work to define the textures of the actors' garments and the emotional weight of their expressions. The inclusion of calligraphic text surrounding the figures provides context, linking the theatrical persona to the literary archetype.
Kunisada was a master of the actor print genre, and this work demonstrates his ability to capture the specific features and mannerisms of performers. The print reflects the cultural climate of 19th-century Japan, where the boundaries between high art and popular entertainment were fluid. By placing kabuki actors in the roles of revered poets, Kunisada elevated the status of the performers while simultaneously making classical themes accessible to a wider audience. The work remains a clear example of the technical precision and stylistic conventions of the Utagawa school, which dominated the print market in Edo. The focus on characterisation and the use of expressive, angular lines are hallmarks of Kunisada's approach to portraiture, ensuring that each figure possesses a distinct presence within the frame.
