This panel is a component of the altarpiece commissioned for the church of Sant'Antonio Abate in Siena. Sassetta, a leading figure of the Sienese school, depicts the ascetic saint enduring a physical assault by demonic figures. The composition is organised across a barren, rocky terrain, where the saint is shown prone on the ground, surrounded by three grotesque, hybrid creatures. These figures, rendered with a mixture of animalistic and human features, represent the psychological and physical trials faced by the hermit in the desert.

The artist employs a narrative approach common to the period, where the figures occupy a shallow, stage-like space against a backdrop of rolling hills and a distant, simplified townscape.
